Principle of Operation and Characteristics of Air-Cooled Chiller

The air-cooled chiller unit directly uses the air-cooled condenser on the unit to dissipate heat into the air. In areas where water is scarce or it is inconvenient to use water, air-cooled machines will be used.

Working Principle of Air-Cooled Chiller

During operation, the refrigerant absorbs the heat of the cooled object (such as chilled water) and vaporizes in the evaporator. The compressor continuously extracts the generated gas from the evaporator and compresses it into high-temperature, high-pressure steam. The refrigerant steam is sent to the condenser to exchange heat with the air, condensing into a liquid after releasing heat. After pressure reduction through the throttling mechanism, it enters the evaporator again, vaporizes, and absorbs the heat of the cooled object, thus cycling repeatedly.

Characteristics of Air-Cooled Chiller Units

Compared to water cooled chiller units, air-cooled chiller units use a finned condenser, directly using fan-forced air movement to remove the refrigerant heat, requiring no additional auxiliary equipment. This eliminates the need for cooling towers, cooling water pumps, and cooling pipeline systems. It has certain advantages in installation, especially for small chillers with low cooling requirements, being very advantageous in terms of mobility.

Due to the different heat transfer temperature differences, under the same outdoor environmental conditions, the condensing temperature of the air-cooled chiller is higher than that of the water-cooled type. Therefore, for the same cooling capacity, the power consumption of the air-cooled chiller unit will be higher. In terms of energy efficiency, water-cooled units usually have a cooling capacity 300 to 500 Kcal/h higher than air-cooled units.

The air cooled chiller unit avoids problems such as condenser scaling and water pipe blockage caused by poor water quality areas, and saves water resources. However, the heat exchange efficiency of its finned condenser is significantly affected by the accumulation of dirt, so a dust filter grid must be set in front of the heat dissipation fin tubes, and regular cleaning is necessary.
